Apple sold out of its latest smartphone, with more than 5 million iPhone 5 sales in the three days after it hit stores, Apple said in a press release on Monday.
That number blasted past sales of the iPhone 4S. When Apple introduced it in October 2011, it sold more than 4 million units in its first weekend.
With the iPhone 5, Apple said that while the majority of preorders have been shipped to customers, many are scheduled to go out in October.
"Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."
On Friday, Apple fans lined up around the world to get their hands on the new smartphone - which is thinner and lighter and has a bigger screen.
